The first advice you got was best. Find an attorney who is willing to train you. I worked 3 years for an attorney and then another year and a half for a title company owned by the same attorney and a bank. Some states don't require E & O Insurance, and a lot of abstractors work without it, but it is a BIG risk. Mistakes in this business can cost you millions. I don't mean to be discouraging. I love this business, but there are still some days that I hate it, too. You just can't learn title work in a few days, there is just too much to learn. I'm in the process of training someone now, and I expect it to be a couple of months before I'm comfortable with a newbie doing current owner work without my standing over him, and longer than that for a full search. This guy is an intelligent person, with lots of common sense, and maybe part of the time it takes for his training is just my own paranoia, but better safe than in court. If there are any actual training courses in Alabama for abstractors, I haven't heard of them. How about it, folks, is there something in Alabama I don't know about, other than a few seminars offered to attorneys?
