Paul,
You don't need OCR and are not using it (OCR converts a .tif type image to a document that can be edited, like a Word ".doc" or a ".rtf". Scanners are basically digital cameras with the lens spread out. Digital cameras are used in limited situations to capture documents (limited because they cost more and the outer edges can distort). See this article for more details (or search the web using something like "document photography"): http://genforum.genealogy.com/tips/messages/2459.html.
Some of the new digital cameras do have text modes and of course the higher the resolution the better the image. Maybe someone else in the forum will post if they are currently using one or you may just have to experiment.
There are other hand held scanners, see the SCANPAGE at http://www.autarchic.com/, TravelScan Pro at http://www.ambir.com/class.asp?class=1&topic=Scanners,
or the Pentax DSmobile at http://www.pentaxtech.com/Products/DSMobile/dsmobile_content.htm.
