We scan our files as TIFs and then if we want to e-mail them as PDFs we have a program that works like a printer; it converts the file to PDF, opens my mail client and attaches the file to a blank e-mail. I think the program is called pdfMailer, but there are several that do this, and it was only $40.
If I want to save a PDF on my computer, I use Adobe Acrobat to create the file.
I'm not sure this is ideal, but it works for us. We have some clients that don't want PDFs because they sometimes take a long time to load and print; some clients just want us to email the Multi-Page TIF.
Just my $0.02.
