I see both sides. I suggest getting a rough count online as that will let everyone keep up with what kind of interest is really being generated by this effort. But, I also see the need for a lot of planning especially on the agenda for the meeting as that will be the final determining factor as to whether some of us will find any value in attending this conference. What are the most important tasks/problems to address first. A rough count now may be very inccurate now if there isn't a definite plan in place later that will address the needs to unite. That inaccuracy could go either way, up if you generate a lot of interest, or down if you don't seem to be able to get a focus going. You might consider tentative reservations at two places, one large, one small and leave yourself some wiggle room to cancel one when you have a better idea what will actually happen.
