I believe you have your choice of mileage or actual costs, but I think the mileage is usually going to win out there. If gas is $2.00/gal. and you get 16 miles per gallon (which is about what I get in my Jeep - I have a lead foot) that means you are deducting $5.92 per gallon, or $3.92 more than the cost of the gas. I guess you would have to see what you are spending on repairs and other actual expenses to see which is better.
I'm not an accountant, but this seems to be what I remember being told by mine.
