I just read Shannon's last post, again, and I don't see anything that could be considered shameful, moronic, or unprofessional. Shannon has many years of experience and in my opinion, she is absolutely correct. It was very good, practical advice.
I stand by my advice, and Shannon's, and Jay's, and Julie's, and Loretta's, etc... The best way to learn this business is to get "proper" training by working for a title company or attorney for a few years. It is naive to think that you can pick this up from an on-line, self study course. I have been doing this for a dozen years and I still learn new things all the time. When I think back to all that I didn't know my first few years - it scares me! I guess if you never properly learn the job, you will never doubt yourself.
I reviewed the on-line content of Mr. Stephen's course and, in my opinion, while it was a good overview of the business, it in no way provides enough information to do a thorough title search. It was missing a massive amount of state specific information that you have to know to do the job properly. I think the sites that offer the course are very misleading and should contain a disclaimer.
I have to believe that anyone posting such great endorsements about his product is either receiving a commission or just doesn't know enough about the job to make an informed decision.
I am also very suspicious of Mr. Stephen offering the course under several different course names on several different web sites. Maybe it is due to poor planning, but it seems to take advantage of people who are seeking information and don't realize that they are buying the same course again. I am also curious to know who John Sarro is... he posted a glowing endorsement for William Stephen's product and his e-mail address is william1962us@yahoo.com. Just a coincidence? Maybe.
In any regard... It is foolish to criticize those who advise MORE training; especially if those giving the advice have more experience in the business than you do.
Regards,
Robert A. Franco
