The thing that strikes me as odd is the notion that nobody in this business pays in December. I have always found December to be a great month for my clients to catch up on older bills so they can book the charges for the current year. I do this with my own bills and real estate taxes. So in my area, I find that everyone pays in December.
As far as carrying a client with cash flow problems, I've had some hits and misses over the years. I had one fall way behind about twenty years ago, but they got caught up in about a year, and have never been a problem since. They are still one of my favorite clients. I've had a couple of others that had short term problems, but eventually came current and stayed that way. I've had three file bankruptcy and leave me holding the bag.
As Robert said so well, you just have to look at the situation with the client, and determine how far you can afford or want to help them.
