You know, Texas was an independent nation for 10 years before joining the United States. As part of the agreement to join we kept all of our public lands. We used them to pay civil war widows and veterans and even traded some for the capital building.
Also, as part of the agreement we reserved the right to split into five separate states. As far as I know we still have this option.
