I think it depends on the type of documents one is searching- and their end use. In a few counties in the US for some kinds of research- the online really IS the same index and NO different in areas where no hard copy searches are accessible. (This would not apply to property searches but other public records.) Even still- there are maybe only a handful of counties like this (under a half dozen that really are from the county). Otherwise- 99% of the time- a hands on search as others have pointed out here too- is the accurate way to go. As far as those companies promoting online or "database" type searches- they need to be aware of what the liability is for that and if they choose to take that risk- they certainly can do so!
