I have a Brother MFC 8500 -- it's a five in one I bought on clearance at Office Depot. Regular price is about $350. It scans into memory, faxes quickly, scans very quickly and clearly, and also prints. The toner is not too expensive -- about $70 for 6000 pages. Having used it for awhile I can tell you it's definitely worth the money!
Also, you said you have to feed page in to your fax machine one at a time so they won't stick -- did it always do this? If not, you may just need to replace the little plastic piece that separates the pages as they go in. At least that's what happened on my old Xerox machine. Every six months or so the pages would start sticking together and for about $10 I'd order a replacement part from Xerox which would fix the problem.
