Lisa, I am not telling anyone what to charge - what I am saying is that there are the costs of doing business - ANY business - and then there are the ACTUAL costs of the search. The gas, tolls, pens, paper, computer, and everything else are tax write-offs for a reason. When you boil down why the client has you do the work, versus hiring someone else to do it, is because of your knowlegde in the field.
Your knowledge is what makes your TIME as valuable as it is...
And for the record, I know of independent abstractors charging as much as $150 per full abstract here in NYC and the surrounding areas. I find it hard to believe that the price could be so drastically different that people are having a hard time elsewhere in the country. If such is the case, again, I say that those people should reconsider what they are charging for their work, rather than hold a grudge against a client for calling with a question...
