Laws do exist that if a mortgage has been paid off and no release was filed by the lender within a specified period of time that this type of document can be filed. I would definitely provide a copy of the release you did find. If the release was wrongfully filed-then the person is guilty of filing a fraudulent doc and criminal penalties can be assessed. So I doubt the person would do this without reason. It is kind of like - where is Interlink Mortgage - that company everyone has been talking about.
