Happened to me just a week ago.  I do the search - no current open deed of trust.  I know that happens sometimes, but went back to them and specifically asked (before turning in the report) if they expected me to find a DOT and if she went by ANY other names.  They replied that they didn't know if there should be a DOT and that they didn't know of any AKAs.   They requested an update a few weeks later and there was a new Deed where she had sold the property - under a completely different name.  Go back into my search and find a DOT in that other name.  There was no aka or prior reference on this DOT.  Nothing in the index to let me know that this was my person.  I was furious.
