My advice is to join NALTEA if you haven't already. One of their stated goals is to "...establish and maintain uniform standards and practices for the profession of land records abstracting by setting forth guidelines for training, experience and ethical conduct."
I don't like the idea of government getting involved in the industry any more than they already are. I believe it's up to us as abstractors and examiners to police ourselves. For me, leaving the business is not an option; that would be admitting defeat, and I don't like to lose. That's my advice, for what it's worth...
