I appreciate the information and your opinion about the industry. I agree 100% that there is a change taking place and if we don't step up and do something the cost to many abstractors will be high.
I do believe that NALTEA is a huge step forward for us. Just forming a group of peers who, day in day out do the work and know the business is priceless. Getting other organizations to recognize us as professionals, who abide by ethics and standards will certainly help give us some clout at some point. Whether that comes before our industry changes, remains to be seen.
I have to say too, about your going back to abstracting. Go for it if you want too! When we went statewide, and now covering two more states. We set our pricing based on a general pattern within our state(s). Weighing in the facts concerning amount of travel, mileage, and copies, which are all included in our flat rate. Some said we were high, some may still think that, but we are not having to raise our prices, based on the price of fuel, fuel for us is a non-issue. Yes, at some point it may very well be, however not now.
So my point is for you, maybe you don't have to undercut your competitors to gain clients? I am sure you can do quality work in a timely fashion. That will be what lands your clients!
Best Wishes!
