Yes, to both questions.  I typically buy a dozen reference books when I take on a subject and surprisingly the best I have seen for basic website design is Creating Web Pages for Dummies, by Wiley Publications.  I believe they even have their books online.  Even if you are going to barely program this is helpful.

Probably, when you click on the directory you are clicking a hyperlink that then opens the new page.  If so, try right clicking the link and change the properties to point to what you want.
