I got stiffed under similar circumstances when I was a rookie.
TIP: If it is a project(like a "special project"), ask for 25%-50% up front in advance as a "non-refundable retainer". Most attorney's I talk to operate on a retainer model. I mean, think about it.
When I hear "Special Project" I think $1,000 USD at least, THOSE kind of projects. 25-50% of that up front is pretty nice.
And if they say no? Well then you just saved yourself from potentially get stiffed.
If they say "yes", then you are eating a Filet Minion Sandwich for lunch!
