I do paternity cases. In the matter of civil cases we normally have the testing done under the supervision of a doctor to assure that the proper expertise has been employed. He normally farms the work out to a licensed laboratory after he has drawn the sample either blood or saliva. In the event that I would need to introduce this evidence at trial I would have to do it through expert witness testimony, and would want unimpeachable credentials for the witness in order to avoid challenge by my opponent on voir dire of the expert.
