Sorry if you were insulted...just returning your usual sarcasm. If you accept the above quotation contained in your post then you have to admit that there was indiscriminate murder of individuals other than Muslims.
While there was an element of defense involved, and especially promoted by the Byzantine Empire in the East and Spain in the west... There were other motives also. For those that chose to join a crusade there was a pardon of crimes, forgiveness of debt , and let us not forget the guaranty of a better after life if killed in battle. Impoverished nobilty had the opportunity to hold land. Small kingdoms were carved out ostensibly to make the area safe for pilgrims, but in reality allowed the fuedal nobility to line its pockets.
