Even sugar-based ethanol only produces about 77,000 btus per gallon. Gasoline contains 119,000 to 125,000 btus per gallon. I saw a study done by a guy at Cornell University that showed that it takes about 131,000 btus to produce a gallon of ethanol, which means it takes about 70% more energy to make ethanol than the energy it produces.
Besides, according to what I've read, Brazil only consumes about 10 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel per year, whereas the US consumes over 170 billion gallons annually. Let's face it, ethanol is just not a workable solution for an economy as big as ours.
