I was surprised how easy my birth certificate was to get. I had my wallet stolen and had to get a new driver license. I went to the DMV (and waited in line) and was told that I would have to go to the Social Security Office and get a Social Security card in order to get a driver license.
So, I went to the Social Security Office (and waited in line) and was told that I would need a copy of my birth certificate to get a Social Security card.
So, I drove to the next town over, where I was born, and I visited a small office downtown where the birth records are kept, I'm not even sure what it was called. I walked right up to the nice lady behind the counter (no waiting required) and I asked for a certified copy of my birth certificate. She asked for my name and $10 and I was all set.
What struck me as odd... I didn't need to prove who I was to get the birth certificate (thankfully, because all of my ID had been stolen) and with that piece of paper I was able to get a Social Security Card and a Driver License. I'm not really sure how the Social Security Office or the DMV really knew that it was really MY birth certificate, or MY Social Security card... or why that was any better than my word... but I'm sure it made some bureaucrat happy that I jumped through their hoops. It just doesn't make me feel all that confident in ID's when I check them at closings.
Anyway... for what it's worth I thought I would share that story. If I could figure out a way to work the AMC Gremlin into another post in this thread about how "scary" Obama is, I would do that too.
Best,
Robert A. Franco
