Hi Debbie,
I've been using MetroHiSpeed (www.metrohispeed.com/) for a couple of years now. They offer fax-to-email and email-to-fax, directly from your email program or from their website. Works with PCs and Macs, and PDAs. 1000 pages a month for $12.95, includes a dedicated toll-free number. Supported file types include Word, text, pdf, Excel and many more. Very reliable service. No long distance charges.
Not only can you receive faxes by email, you can also email to a client's fax machine, if necessary. You can give up your fax line and fax machine entirely.
I save my typed reports and scanned deeds as pdfs and send them as attachments to an email. Every one of my clients turned out to prefer emails instead of faxes -- it's faster and you don't have to print what you don't want. For scanning, look into a Fujitsu Scan Snap. Fast, two-sided scanning. Costs a bit more than some, but you can't beat the speed and quality.
I cancelled my land line service entirely and now use Metro Hi Speed and my cell phone (iPhone with unlimited data service) for all my business calls. Scanned all my old files to pdf last year, so now I can fit a title plant on my laptop. Which made it much less painful when the downturn forced me to give up my office space...
