We use the HP Capshare too. We wouldn't be without one. It's true HP stopped producing the unit back in 2000 but I've never seen anything that even comes close. I tried using the serial cable hookup and all I can say is don't bother. The serial connection is beyond slow. You can get an infrared port that plug into your computer's usb port for about 10 bucks to make the download speed plenty fast.
The copies the capshare produces are excellent and its easy to use. It also includes a little window so you can see how your copy looks before leaving the courthouse. With a little practice we were producing copies on the capshare faster than the clerks can make them on the office copiers. Another advantage is you don't have to scan paper copies after you get back to the office. You can clean the copies up, crop them, and enhance them before sending them by email or fax.
We found the first one on eBay and paid $700. It paid for itself the very first month. The second one we bought on eBay for $250 because it was no longer in the box.
I wrote a little review on the capshare in conjuction with my article on the mobile offices we built. I included a feed from eBay and just noticed there are two for sale right now with current bids of $199 and 439. Hmmm, I may just bid on one of these to see if I can score a backup. If your interested in the review and eBay listings you can find it here. The article on building a mobile office system is here.
