Raise rates.
While there was an influx of cheap, inexperienced researchers in this area a few years ago, a result of the vacuum left by state-wide title plant consolidations, many of these fly-by-night providers have flown the coop, leaving their clients to search for what few of us remain. I've raised my rates twice in the past 18 months. In doing so, I've increased revenue and lost only one client who felt that their already steeply-discounted / rate-frozen service was too much (lol). They alleged that they had people who could do the work more cheaply, although they liked our years of service and the quality of our product. If they approach us again, and I suspect that they will, we will certainly be providing them with sticker-shock, so this should be fun.
My advice is to raise rates significantly; provide a quality product at high cost and become a niche market provider. Our reputation as abstractors of last resort has done us well, as few people can properly do the fundamental research that we offer. Find your niche and always be your own best self-promoter.
