As long as there are people willing to pay for private health insurance, the "public option" will remain an option. If people aren't willing to pay for private health insurance, I suppose that would be a sign that the government run system is better than the private system. If it is really better, there is no harm in that. But, since you argue that it is so inferior - that the government can't adequately run health care - I don't think we have to worry about it.
