I think the key word in all our dealings should be as you said, "business".
When in business, one needs to CYA, even with family members.
If members of the family were employees, they should be treated as
the same as any other employee would be, and if a partner, a partnership
agreement should be in place to handle such details and how the business
will end or be bought out in case of disagreement or death. Not planning
ahead and doing the "legal legwork" will always cause disagreement(s) or
problems later. The attorney's motto, "pay me now or pay me later". Often
paying now cost much less, right Robert or Kevin ?
