Greenbriar Graphics gets high marks from the PC users that I know.

Metes And Bounds for the Mac. They also have a version for the iPhone and iPad. Don't know if they have a PC version too.

Both can handle complicated legals, STR system, comparison of conflicting surveys, etc. Greenbriar may be more polished since it's been around longer. If you're Mac-only, I think Metes may be your only choice.

Not sure about current prices - Metes used to be under $100, Greenbriar is a good bit more if I remember right.

If all you need is something simple to check whether a description closes, you could probably make do with the iPhone version.
