We've been doing it for years now. No problems.
We use freeware without issue.
Doesn't always help though, that clients don't train their own crews to understand how to open and view files. More problems trying to talk people through how to open a PDF or scroll to the next page of a spreadsheet than anything else. Frustrating when you set it all up to be fool proof and the fools prove you wrong.
