Stick with Brother.  All MFC now scan to pdf.  Every Brother we've ever owned has lasted years, gone thru major abuse, TRAVELED to several different states and never quit (until one of them got fried by a direct lightening strike on our house).    Our current BIG workhorse is the Brother MFC-8460N which is very fast and does everything you could want.  We can scan directly into our server, or e-mail, or fax....or whatever you want.  (We don't care about color, so it is a very inexpensive unit even tho it is large and office-quality and made for heavy-duty use.)

My IT guy is a fanatic about researching everything and he has always recommended Brother products.
