My experience with multifunction machines was that while they did a good job with printing & faxing, the scanning function didn't work very well. My clients complained that the docs were muddy & difficult to read.
I went with a stand-alone, Kodak ScanMate scanner about 6 years ago & haven't had a single problem since. It has a very small footprint so it doesn't take up much room in my shoebox of an office. There are examiners I know who carry their scanners, printers & laptops to the Registry, where there's wi-fi & send reports out as they do the titles. Everyone likes them & I believe I'm the only person with a Kodak. I think everyone else uses a ScanSnap (not sure of the exact name).
Hope this helps
