The public has access to court records in Maine.  If you have a case number and want to see the file you simply request it from the clerk.  

 If you want to run a search on Civil or Criminal records on a particular individual or company that may exist, and do not have a case number, the clerk conducts the index search as there are no public access terminals.

This directive went into effect on January 8, 2003 along with a turn around time for searches.  I don't of any court cases regarding this practice.
