I regularly place orders exactly like this with local searchers and I always make sure to include the information on the deed I'm looking for so that the local can verify that the book/page I'm providing is actually what I need. I also include notes that if the book/page isn't the deed I need, that a search would need to be done and charged for.

If you were "just" provided a book/page and no other information for you to even know whether it was the doc the customer needed or not, that's on the customer. You should be paid in full and I would pay you in full and chalk it up to a learning experience for me.
