My office services six central Ohio counties. We have limited remote access in 5 of the 6. The fifth county where we have the most remote access did not digitize a separate and independent right of way set of indices. We have to physically go to all of our counties to complete a full search of 42 years minimum. We have been getting more 100 year search request and those have to be completed at the Recorder's office.
A problem we are running into is too many Recorders" office staff do not understand their own computer access system, whether it is a remote access or in office computer access. In fact, we have one county that refused to make copies of any documents. You have to make them yourself which requires one to travel to that county. Two of our six counties have just recently watermarked their remote documents. The charge for one of those counties that watermarked remote documents is $4.00 per page.
Not only have these office's forgot their primary duty is to be a custodian of the records, they have the misconceived notion they are a for-profit business. They are a service office, a public service of the county government.
