SKILL and EXPERIENCE.  Yep, that's what it takes.  I understand the issues in Genesee, I think, even tho I've not searched there.  I run into those issues in Washtenaw; and therefore search by name, parcel ID number, and tract (when a lot in a subdivision) EVERY TIME.  Can't tell you how often I find things in one place but not the other because of indexing errors.  (Also, in Washtenaw, they don't associate documents in a way that makes sense to me.  You can find a mortgage under John Smith but don't know if it's discharged until you plug in that particular book/page -- THEN you see associated documents.  You have to pull it up in a different way.  It's sort of crazy...)
