so far I have been paid on the ones that have been cancelled... it took a couple of emails but I got paid; fortunately I now deal with the office manager instead of his secretary so I seem to be getting paid quicker and everything I do for them

I generally only do one or two searches a month for them so I should never be stiffed for more than a search or two -- to head off your next questions is I cater to him because he is a very busy attorney and I know his searcher is closer to retirement than I am and I hope to pick up more as she scales back
