When Bill Elliott and I left the law office, he went to great trouble to put together a (very professional) folder which explained our experience, area of expertise, a mini-resume, fee structure and county coverage. So imagine our surprise when companies called with the same burning question: "What do you charge for current owner?" We finally ditched the packages but both commented on why someone asking for such pertinent information wouldn't wonder about who was gathering it for them.
We've all heard the horror stories but I can now say I experienced one first-hand last week when a man came up to me in the reg of deeds and asked if I was a title searcher. When I said yes, he asked if I could help him, that he was retiring soon, had been given a search to see if he liked the business, and wanted to know how to find the deed for the address he had in her hand. Geez. Where to start??? I reminded him that judgments weren't in that building but across the street now, to which he replied, "What's a judgment?"
I'd say we're all safe for a while. ;)
