I agree with Jacqueline. However, the client usually has their own specific requirements. Some want less than I am comfortable signing my name to. We usually conduct our searches to the standards that Jacqueline outlined, but some clients don't want to pay for what they consider to be extra work.
The underwriters have somehow decided that "short searches" are acceptable under some circumstances and it has evolved into several different search types, as each client has their own interpretation of the underwriter's requirements. It has become a real pain and created additional risks for everyone. We do work for 50+ clients and it is tough to remeber which wants what. Therefore we do more than the client asks for most of the time. Better safe than sorry.
