hey George you need to come to SC... the abstractors in Georgetown and Horry have a reputation of throwing "Newbie" abstractor's personal things on the floor to remove them from a spot that they "own". One independent paralegal has two employees, sits at a map counter on one side of the registry using it as her 6' desk space where her personal fax machine with her personal telephone line comes into the courthouse which she pays for the telephone line. She charges other select paralegals for the use of the fax machine. The rest of us use a fax machine in the Clerk's office for 50 cents per page local and $1.00 per page long distance. Heaven forbid that you have to use a map book in her personal space. The county let her put this personal phone line in at a time when she and three others were the only ones searching the county. Now there are probably 10 of us in there constantly and another 10 that travel in there from other counties.
We had a paralegal move away. The paralegal that firm hired just thought that she would be allowed to use the same space at the table where she was trained. No, her work was removed one day and the one who rules, decided that another independent would be having that spot. The rest of us stand and search while a group of six get to sit and use the table.
I am a NC abstractor and I searched 13 counties in Southeastern NC and have visited four other registries in NC. Never have I seen anything like this.... Get me back to NC .... With a hostile environment like this I deserve every bit of pay I get here. These select group would never do title work for companies and the attorneys here will not use independents other than this select group..... Beautiful places Smiling faces....
