Mark
I had the same experience with First American here in
Connecticut this past year. I had been searching for
them for about 2 years. The volume was good.
The payment was great. Then without any explanation
it ended about a year ago. There had been no complaints
about the work. So I tried to find out what the
problem was. All I got were evasive answers. I know my
prices were not too high because they set the price
schedule themselves. Datatrace may be the problem,
but your posting this week is the first that I have
heard of it.
You are probably correct to supplement your income
with another related line of work.It generally works
out pretty well so long as you can manage your time.
This is probably a good way to adapt to the impact of
Datatrace.
If Datatrace becomes the norm, you may wish
to consider employment with a law firm as a title
searcher. If Datatrace is marketing an online service
and Datatrace's fees are too high, the law firms may wish
to hire searchers directly to perform on line searches
from Datatrace's data base.
If you are a notary, you may want to look
into getting involved with signing services and
performing witness closings.
Real estate paralegal work is another avenue that you
may want to explore. The required training is generally
short term, and the money is pretty good. In New York
with a few years experience you can command $75,000 -$80,000
per year. You may be able to make even more if you
free lance paralegal services to small law firms on a
contracting basis.
If title searching becomes a part time endeavor as a
result of Datatrace, then you may want to offer a
combination of the above services to your clients as a
package deal. There is a market out there for this.
Generally it is cheaper for a law firm, title company
or signing service to outsource and contract with
outside vendors on an as needed basis if their budgets
do not allow for full time employees.
As much trouble a Datatrace may create, it is not the
end of the world. With a little creativity, you will
survive, and may find yourself better off
