I've found it helps tremendously if you invoice on a monthly basis. This makes it easier to generate a bill that says, "here's your bill for this month, this is what you owe from last month, etc." Include as much information as you can, i.e., file name, client's file number, and so forth.
We have certain days of the month set aside that we send out invoices, call our late-pays, and take care of other financial housekeeping chores. I a firm believer in the adage, "keep thy shop, and thy shop will keep thee". It can be a drudge sometimes, but it pays off in the long run.
