The only major requirement for SOT certification is E&O insurance, and while I believe that should be a requirement for certification for the association, I don't think it should be a membership requirement. I know a lot of good abstractors that do not carry E&O because it is expensive and their clients don't require it. On the other hand I know some abstractors that carry E&O that aren't all that good.

I think that anyone engaged in the business of title abstracting should be able to join the association and I think it is enough to take them at thier word for membership purposes. Why would they even want to join if they aren't abstractors?

When it comes to certification, I hope the association will require a bit more, such as references and E&O insurance.

Thanks,
Robert.
