OH How i know how you feel!! 
Fireplace, Bonfire, barbeque, are all words that easily come to mind....

But the next best thing for me is thatI store them via Adobe PDF or TIFF, and name them by company acronym and order#. on CDR/W's by month.
I know someone that has 1 cdrw for each client, he says that works well also.

I've created a database that handles everything else so i dont have to remember what disk its in or pretty much anything else related to the order.
