I am not sure what Pennsylvania's position is, but in Connecticut an LLC is a hybrid between a corporation and a partnership. Pursuant to Connecticut law an LLC is treated as a corporation in its external dealings with other parties, and something similar to the corporate shield protects one's personal assets pretty much to the same extent as a corporation. Internally it is run like a partnership, and without the formalities of a corporation.
