I know verizon is awesome.  I have friends round the country who have it and never have problems.  And most of their phones are web capable.  You need to be sure to get a tri mode phone.  I have an LG, which is made by Kyocera.  They are very user friendly.  Check out the web sites for kyocera and motorola and verizon wireless and compare the phones to see which ones have the features you need,  Some have better viewable screens than others for reading emails.  But it also determines the price range too.
