Yes, I too have some confusion regarding the older messages. I actually clicked on "show all replies" and went through and clicked on all the old messages on that screen so now I only see the "NEW" tag on the ones I haven't read.
Slade was going to wait a few weeks to upload this changes after he had been tracking the views for a while, but due to some server problems we were having the other day he was forced to upload it a bit early. But you are right, in a week or two it will be nice.
