It took a while, but I finally found the post you were refering to.  You posted the following question:

Hi Slade, is there anyway to find someone by just their name or name of their business in the business directory?

Slade posted the following response:

I can, but you can't at the moment... there hasn't been much call for it, I think because if you know the name of a company, it's likely you know the location also and can find them that way.  One instance that I can think of off the top of my head where this might be useful would be to track down a deadbeat; but if a company defaults on their obligations, moves, and sets up shop elsewhere (such has allegedly happened a few times according to posts on our message board), then they'll likely be changing their company name.

As far as searching by person name as opposed to company name, we have no plans of making the names of individual registered users searchable.  I think most users expect such data to be kept private, and they do not expect their personal contact information to be put into a publicly accessible directory.  Such data would likely be an attractive target for spammers looking to illegally compile mailing lists, and really would be of limited value to legitimate users.

We believe that searching by an INDIVIDUAL'S registered name is an invastion of privacy, however - as Slade indicated, the reason we didn't include the search by BUSINESS NAME feature is there just wasn't a demand or need for it.  Searching by Business Name is not an invasion of privacy as the information provided in the business listing is meant to be public in the directory.

Now that we have the Review System, there may be a need to add this feature and we are discussing it.  We may add the "search by BUSINESS NAME" feature, but NOT the "search by INDIVIDUAL NAME" feature.

I hope this clarifies the issue.

Thanks,
Robert A. Franco
