We cover 13 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, and traveling to 3 or 4 counties per day on average adds up to 175-200 miles a day. Figuring roughly 90 minutes per 100 miles traveled, that translates to just shy of three-and-a-half hours a day behind the wheel. If I start out from my house at 7:00 AM to be in my first courthouse by 8:00 or 8:30, that means I only have five-and-a-half to six hours left to actually do searches. Lunch? Forget lunch. Lunch is for wimps. LOL.
I've found that my biggest expense is gasoline...parking really isn't a major issue because our territory doesn't include a major metro area (we don't cover Allegheny county for this very reason...the City of Pittsburgh has a 50% parking tax, the highest of any major US city). I do travel the PA turnpike, and the tolls can add up fairly quickly. That's all built into our cost structure, though.
The only time I charge extra for a "rush" order is when I fax something from the courthouse, for cost plus our usual markup, of course.
Hope this answers your questions.
Regards,
Scott Perry
