I'm glad you were able to avoid this trap. According to the article, 5% of people who receive these scams respond. I think this figure is probably low considering most of the recipients would not even have accounts with the target institution. I receive 4-5 of these things every week. I use a local small town bank and they haven't been spoofed yet. If the first of these I had received had appeared to be from them, I might have responded.
I almost did when I received one supposedly from Earthlink. I have an account with them. But this spoof was asking for my credit card information and I don't pay by credit card. At first I was angry with Earthlink for trying to convert my payment method. Now I know it wasn't them at all.
