It is a shame that ALTA has been slow in its response to the needs of the independent title abstractor until faced with the challenge of a competitive organization. The next logical question is what is ALTA prepared to do to change that. The title abstractors seem to have been lost in the shuffle of ALTA's omnibus grouping of title professionals from all areas of the industry, and ALTA seems to have been slow on the uptake of industry developments which have adversely impacted on the abstractors in recent years. If it takes competition to improve the position of the independent abstractor in the industry, then on with the competition. ALTA's new president's message stating that NALTEA is an organization that need not be formed is wrong. NALTEA is an example of an organization that the abstractors very much need to represent their interests.Everyone benefits from competition in a free enterprise system.
