Jennifer, you are right. Acting as a signing agent is an excellent way to augment your abstracting income. There is a ready market for the signing agents. The work is much easier than performing a difficult title search. The money is better than that which is paid for a current owner search. There is also much more flexibility for repeat business even when you turn away a signing than there is when you turn away an abstracting order.
